Environmental assessments

When launching a business project that may have an impact on environment and nature, environmental assessments and environmental impact assessments must be made. How and what to investigate depends on the project and the existing rules. The environmental assessments must make sure that the necessary knowledge is available when the authorities have to make a decision of allowing or not allowing the project.

A substantial environmental impact assessment (EIA) is being made regarding the aluminium project. It is the project itself that is responsible for this. It will describe the impacts of the project in detail and what is actively done to limit the possible negative effects. The EIA must be approved by the environmental authorities who will have to make sure that the assessments have been done in compliance with recognized standards.

A strategic environmental assessment (SEA) is also being made. This must secure that environmental considerations are a part of the political decisions regarding what kind of development is desired and where to have such development.

Both types of assessments are based on international norms and standards where local conditions are also considered. You can learn more about the content of the assessments and the process regarding them in the menu on the left.
