    The price of aluminum is at its lowest level for eighteen months and has again crept under USD 2000/ton on the London Metal Exchange (LME - http://www.lme.com/aluminium.asp). The price drop does not reflect the price development that the aluminum industry experienced between 2008 and 2009, where the price fell from over USD 3000/ton in mid 2008 to below USD 1300/ton in early 2009.

    The knowledge and attitude assessment 2011 is published December this year. HS Analyse every year since 2007 asked the population in Greenland of their knowledge of and attitude towards the Aluminum Project.The survey is carried out by telephone interviews in the period from October to November 2011. In total 976 respondents have answered questions in the survey. The survey was carried out before the information programs about the project were shown on national TV.

    Having worked two years as student worker / project assistant at Greenland Developments Copenhagen office, Aviaja Lyberth Hauptmann ends her position. She has developed material for the web page as well as analytical work and updates on the aluminum industry.

    There are shared fundamentals for aluminum industry in China and Greenland. Even though China is far from Greenland and society differs in many ways there are common traits with the aluminum smelter project in Maniitsoq. Minister Ove Karl Berthelsen visited China Power Investment’s (CPI) new Xinye smelter in the western Chinese province of Qinghai in November 2011. This province has historically had agriculture as the primary industry. The precondition for the project here has been the availability of energy and the wish to develop society.

    What are the framework conditions for a Greenlandic aluminium project?Read the new information on the website about the aluminium industry's framework conditions. The framework conditions determine, among other things, the project's construction and operating costs. It includes energy and labour as some of the major costs. The conditions for a given project are largely determined by the geographical location of the project. Whether Greenland is able to compete in a global context is determined by the framework conditions that Greenland gives to the industry.

    To present a view into the global context of the Greenlandic aluminum project, we will in the following two weeks publish a short series of stories on the aluminum industry.The stories will aim at providing relevant background information and the future prospects of the aluminum industry and consequently the aluminum project in Greenland.The first week we will publish a story that puts focus on the consumption of aluminum. What is the consumption now and how will it develop in the future.

    Olga Berthelsen Ljungdahl, member of the Qeqqata Kommunia municipal council of IA, believes that companies and individuals must both begin to adapt to future demands. "We must move away from ingrained thinking habits if we are to have maximum benefit of future business opportunities" she says. Olga B. Ljungdahl participated in the delegation from Qeqqata Kommunia Municipality to Icelandat the beginning of October 2011, together with a number of business people.     "Alcoa persists to be positive about the continuation of work on project studies in collaboration with Greenland's Government," said the Alcoa’s Icelandic contact person for the Greenland aluminium project, Kristjan Halldorsson, at a seminar on the aluminium project in September 2011.Kristjan Halldorsson is Alcoa's Community Relations Manager for North Iceland and he has been associated with the aluminium project in Maniitsoq since 2009. During the public meeting in Maniitsoq, Kristjan Halldorsson also said:

    Jakob Lyberth, member of Board of MAPP, the fishing and hunting association in Maniitsoq, who was recently been on an information trip to East Iceland, believes that the aluminium project, if realised, will help to improve conditions for the hunting and fishing industry in the Maniitsoq area.

Since the beginning of the project in 2006 many assessments and reports have been made.     At the beginning of June, 16 students from class 9.a from Atuarfik Kilaaseraq in Maniitsoq, along with their teacher Vilhelm Josefsen and parent representative Søren Lyberth went on a study trip to East Iceland. During the study trip, 9.a visited among other places Alcoa's Fjardaál aluminium smelter at Reydarfjördur and Karahnjukar hydroelectric station, which is owned by the Icelandic energy company Landsvirkjun. Vilhelm Josefsen says that after returning to Maniitsoq they jointly evaluated the benefits of the study trip.

    Kirsten Teera Grønvold og Marianne Skifte Møller er to kvindelige aktive medlemmer af Maniitsoq borgerforening, som deltog på informationsrejsen til Island i maj måned. De beretter deres rejse positivt hvor de siger, at de fik mange gode oplysninger med i bagagen. Under borger informationsmødet som blev afholdt efter turen fortalte Kirsten Teera Grønvold at hun i starten af aluminiumsprojektet har været en af tvivlere men dette havde ændret sig under Islandsturen idet hun ikke har grund til at sige nej til projektet.
